A pharmacist has warned anyone who takes vitamin D supplements about the potential risks of taking too much.
Our bodies produce vitamin D naturally when exposed to sunlight. Additionally, we also get the vitamin from certain foods and from supplements.
Nevertheless, large numbers of people in the UK are deficient in vitamin D. In a study released earlier this year, around 50 percent of Brits were found to be lacking sufficient levels of vitamin D.
While around one in six report taking a supplement, one pharmacist has issued a warning about potentially taking too much.
Too much of a good thing can be harmful. Here's what you need to know.
Why Vitamin D Matters
Vitamin D is essential for:
Bone health – Helps absorb calcium
Immune function – Supports the body's defense system
Muscle function – Important for strength and movement
Mood regulation – Linked to mental well-being
Deficiency can lead to fatigue, bone pain, muscle weakness, and increased risk of fractures. In severe cases, it can cause rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.
But as with many things, balance is key.
The Warning: Too Much Vitamin D Can Be Dangerous
The pharmacist warns that taking excessive amounts of vitamin D supplements can lead to a condition called hypervitaminosis D (vitamin D toxicity).
This doesn't happen from sun exposure or food—only from supplements taken in high doses over time.
