The Things You Can Take Home From a Hotel (And the Things You Absolutely Can't)

A Gentle Guide to Navigating the Gray Areas of Hotel Etiquette

Oh, my dear friend, I know the feeling of checking into a cozy hotel room and noticing all those lovely little amenities. It’s natural to wonder, "Can I take this with me?" At 73, having traveled to visit family and attend various conferences over the years, I have learned a thing or two about hotel room etiquette.

Staying at a hotel often means enjoying a collection of small comforts you wouldn't necessarily have at home. Miniature toiletries, stationery, coffee supplies, and other little touches are there to make your stay more convenient.

But here’s the catch: not everything in a hotel room is a complimentary gift. Some items are specifically supplied for guests to use and may be taken when you leave. Others belong to the hotel and are expected to remain in the room. Taking those items can lead to an unexpected charge on your bill and, depending on the circumstances and local law, potentially more serious consequences.

What You Can (Usually) Take Home

These items are typically considered complimentary, meant to be used during your stay or taken with you as a little souvenir.

  • Miniature Toiletries: Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, and soap. These are replenished for each guest and are yours to enjoy.

  • Sewing Kits and Shoe Mitts: These small convenience items are often part of the hotel’s complimentary amenities.

  • Notepads and Pens: The hotel stationery, including a notepad and pen, is generally yours to take.

  • Coffee and Tea Supplies: The single-serving coffee pods, tea bags, and sugar packets are usually complimentary.

  • In-Room Magazines and Brochures: Information about the hotel and local attractions can be taken.

  • Slippers and Robes (Sometimes): In some hotels, the slippers are provided as a take-home item, but the bathrobe is not. If you're unsure, it's always wise to check with the front desk.
